The data used in this Review are taken, where possible, from Eurostat publications. For 1955, and for recent years where Eurostat figures are not available, estimates are based mainly on OECD and other sources adjusted to conform as far as possible to Eurostat principles.
Variables are divided into sectors, where appropriate, according to the Eurostat classification, NACE-CLIO, which splits the economy into the six sectors shown in the tables.

EEC Data are totals or averages for nine countries (Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark).

Belgium Data are for Belgium and Luxembourg combined.

Ireland Data are estimated from incomplete Denmark and often conflicting sources.

1981 e

Data for 1981 have been estimated from incomplete indicators drawn from a wide variety of sources.

1975 PPS Trade and national accounts data are measured in terms of the 1975 PPS, a standard of purchasing power intended to be constant both through time and across countries within the EEC. Data have been converted from currentprice, national-currency values by dividing with national currency price deflators for total domestic expenditure (base 1975=1.00) and then multiplying by Eurostat 1975 purchasing-parity exchange rates. One 1975 PPS is on average for the EEC as a whole equivalent to a 1975 ECU or EUA (European unit of account) and, at
market exchange rates, to 1.24 1975 US dollars. It is also approximately equivalent in buying power to a 1980 £ sterling. Note that data measured in this way represent estimates of real value (in the sense of purchasing power). They are not conceptually the same as 'volume' or 'constant price' data since they incorporate relative price changes.

Table 1 Expenditure and income
The main source is Eurostat National Accounts which covers the years 1960 to 1979. Data for 1955, 1980 and 1981 are based on a number of sources, including OECD National Accounts, OECD Economic Survey, OECD Economic Outlook and various national publications.
Real income is measured after all taxes and transfers, and is defined as GNP at current market prices less net unrequited transfers paid abroad, divided by the deflator for total domestic expenditure and converted to 1975 PPS.
Domestic expenditure is defined as total final expenditure on the territory plus residents' consumption expenditure abroad less non-residents' consumption expenditure on the territory.
Data on the government sector have been taken largely from Eurostat General Government Accounts and Statistics, 1970-77 and OECD National Accounts. Government expenditure comprises total spending of general government on goods and services and current transfers (subsidies and debt interest being excluded). Government income is total taxes and trading income of general government less subsidies, interest payments and capital transfers. The government deficit is the difference between expenditure and income so defined, i.e. the financial deficit.
Income from production by sector is value added at current market prices converted to 1975 PPS. Net taxes on imports and other unallocated items are imputed pro rata to the individual sectors so that they sum to total income from production.
The volume of output is an index of GDP at constant market prices.
The terms-of-trade effect on real income is an index of the ratio of real income from production to the volume of output.
Table 2 Population and employment
The main source of sectoral data on employment is Eurostat National Accounts. Data for 1955, 1980 and 1981 are based on various OECD sources, together with national publications.
For Ireland, as no NACE-CLIO sectoral breakdown is available, OECD sectoral data are linked

to an approximate NACE-CLIO breakdown estimated from the 1971 Census of Population. For Denmark, data on the NACE-CLIO breakdown are available for only a few years and have been supplemented extensively from OECD and other sources.
Employment data relate to total occupied population, i.e. all wage and salary earners, selfemployed, unpaid family workers and the armed forces.
Unemployment data, with the exception of that for Ireland and Denmark, accord with national definitions and are taken from OECD sources, adjusted where necessary to provide continuous series. Population by age is taken from OECD Labour Force Statistics.
Table 3 Balance of payments
The main source is Eurostat National Accounts, supplemented for certain years by OECD sources. The balance of trade is defined as exports of goods valued fob less imports of goods valued cif. Net services includes non-residents' consumption expenditure on the territory less residents' consumption expenditure abroad. Net EEC budget receipts are defined as subsidies from institutions of the European Community less taxes paid to institutions of the European Community (note that, as in Eurostat, these do not sum to zero for the member countries as a group). The current balance is the balance of current transactions with the rest of the world as defined in national accounts.

See below for the breakdown of the balance of trade between net food and raw materials, net fuels and net manufactures.

Table 4 External trade

The primary source is the Eurostat Monthly External Trade Bulletin which covers years from 1960 to 1980. Data for 1955 are taken from the United Nations Yearbook of International Trade Statistics. Estimates for 1981 are based on Eurostat data up to the first quarter supplemented by OECD forecasts.
In order to reconcile trade data with national accounts aggregates, exports and imports of each country have been scaled to match national accounts series for total exports and imports of goods. In addition, data on intra-EC imports have been scaled across countries so that totals for the Community are equal to the sum of intra-EC exports.
The commodity breakdown is defined as follows:

food and raw materials SITC 0, 1, 2 and 4

fuels SITC 3

manufactures

SITC 5-9

Note that trade data are shown here in terms of domestic purchasing power. The value of trade may be increased, at least in the short run, by a currency devaluation and be reduced by a currency appreciation.
